Beer review: Bridge Road Chevalier Saison "le printemps"

Guide to review scoring is on the post Beeradvocate Ratings Systems
Unless otherwise specified, these reviews are my own.

Bridge Road Chevalier Saison Saison / Farmhouse Ale 6.0%

B / 3.75   look: 3.5   smell: 3.5   taste: 4   feel: 3.5   drink: 4

Stamped "le printemps" which according to the web translators means "the spring".

a) Pours a white pillowy head, almost whipped egg-white. Cloudy orange, with good bubbling. Looks nutritious.

s) Sherbet/citrus, some wit-like spice, wursty/fleshy yeast, wet hessian/hay.
Farmhouse Ales: Culture and Craftsmanship in the Belgian Tradition
t) Rosewater/turkish delight, some funky farmyard, some lactic cheesiness, late grapefruit note, and bitterness like lemon pith. Complex and interesting, and an improvement on an earlier tasting (2008 B-).

m) Light and dry, like a cremant champagne, refreshing and easy to consume.

d) Like an aged, if not past-it, sparkling wine, but easy to drink; not for everyone, but lovers of lambics, sours, and wits should find it enjoyable.

  1. the le printemps had the blubery and elderbery right? I like the regular Bridge Rd Saison but the fruity version was to cordially for me. Turns out I really dont like elderberry, tried some in icescream, didnt like that either

  2. You know what, I have no idea !
I looked it up and, yes, indeed, blueberry and elderflower for a one-off.
Well, I didn't notice those elements, although I'd be hard-pressed to describe elderflower anyway. If it's anything like rosewater & grapefruit, then I might be close :-)

  3. Hi, just came accross your review and awesome site, well done. Just for your info the Saison le Printemps is a one off that used elderflowers instead of hops. The blueberries were added during fermentation and dont bring much to the table. However the elderflowers dominate this beers aroma and flavour profile. Pretty much all the aroma is elderflowers, hard to describe but if you have had them as cordial or softdrink, cant go past it. The feral yeast characters do come through as you mentioned on the nose and pallet, but apart from that its all elderflowers. Thanks for the review, and keep up the great blog.
